چکیده

Abstract The occurrence of fingered preferential flow depends on both flow and porous media characteristics. The boundary condition of unsaturated infiltration has been investigated to assess whether it produces unstable wetting in homogeneous coarse sands. Laboratory tracer experiments were conducted in two coarse sand materials; for each sand material two initial conditions of air dry and field capacity were considered. Results indicate that the commonly occurring process of nonponding rainfall can provoke fingered preferential flow in homogeneous sandy soils. This phenomenon is very predominant in dry as compared to wet initial conditions. Models of water flow and solute transport in uniform coarse soils should incorporate the effects of such fingered flow phenomenon.

Nonlocal interface dynamics and pattern formation in gravity-driven unsaturated flow through porous media.

Existing continuum models of multiphase flow in porous media are unable to explain why preferential flow (fingering) occurs during infiltration into homogeneous, dry soil. Following a phase-field methodology, we propose a continuum model that accounts for an apparent surface tension at the wetting front and does not introduce new independent parameters. The model reproduces the observed feature...

Selection of Intermodal Conductivity Averaging Scheme for Unsaturated Flow in Homogeneous Media

The nonlinear solvers in numerical solution of water flow in variably saturated soils are prone to convergence difficulties. Many aspects can give rise to such difficulties, like very dry initial conditions, a steep pressure gradient and great variation of hydraulic conductivity occur across the wetting front during the infiltration of water.  So, the averaging method applied to compute hydraul...

Significance of physicochemical factors in the transmission of Escherichia coli and chloride

Background: Organic manures are the source of many pathogenic bacteria which could be dangerous for human health. Bacterial transmission and retention in soil is important for processes ranging from contaminant degradation during in situ bioremediation to transport of pathogenic bacteria into groundwater. Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the transport of Escherichia coli and chl...

In situ colloid mobilization in Hanford sediments under unsaturated transient flow conditions: effect of irrigation pattern.

Colloid transport may facilitate off-site transport of radioactive wastes at the Hanford site, Washington State. In this study, column experiments were conducted to examine the effect of irrigation schedule on releases of in situ colloids from two Hanford sediments during saturated and unsaturated transientflow and its dependence on solution ionic strength, irrigation rate, and sediment texture...

Simulation of stable and unstable flows in unsaturated homogeneous coarse sand

A numerical model developed to simulate stable and unstable flows in unsaturated porous media is described. Results of numerical studies carried out to simulate laboratory experiments with the assumption of stable flow demonstrate the occurrence of unstable flow for the initial conditions of both air dry and field capacity for unsaturated infiltration in sands. This indicates that the Richards ...
